First, let’s clarify the most common panel types in the office furniture market. The first is particleboard, also referred to as chipboard. It is an artificial board produced by bonding wood chips or other wood fiber materials with adhesives under heat and pressure. Particleboard’s advantages lie in its uniform structure and affordability, making it suitable for manufacturing office furniture components with moderate load-bearing requirements, such as cabinets and drawers. However, it has obvious drawbacks: poor waterproof performance, and it tends to swell and deform when damp—thus, it is not ideal for humid office environments.
The second type is fiberboard, divided into High-Density Fiberboard (HDF) and Medium-Density Fiberboard (MDF). It is made by crushing, soaking, and grinding wood, bamboo, or other plant fibers into wood pulp, followed by the addition of adhesives and hot-pressing. Fiberboard boasts high flatness and fine texture, making it suitable for decorative treatments like painting and veneering. It is often used to make office desk tops, conference tables, and other components requiring an aesthetic finish. Among these, HDF offers excellent load-bearing capacity and wear resistance but shares the same limitation of insufficient waterproofing as particleboard, with a slightly higher price point.
The third type is solid wood board, which is cut from complete wood and is a symbol of quality. The advantages of solid wood boards are natural environmental friendliness, natural texture, excellent texture, and long service life, making them suitable for high-end office spaces such as executive desks and conference tables. However, the disadvantages of solid wood boards are also prominent: high price, easy to deform and crack under the influence of environmental temperature and humidity, and high maintenance costs. Therefore, their application in ordinary office spaces is relatively limited.
The fourth type is melamine faced board, also known as paint-free board. It uses particleboard or fiberboard as the base material, with melamine-faced paper attached to the surface. Key advantages of melamine faced boards include good eco-friendliness, no need for additional painting, easy installation, and a rich variety of surface textures that can mimic natural wood grains. Priced moderately, it is one of the most popular choices in the current office furniture market, suitable for making office desks, file cabinets, partitions, and other office furniture.
After understanding common panel types, let’s examine the core parameters to focus on when purchasing. These parameters directly determine the panel’s performance and safety, so buyers must pay close attention to them.

The first key parameter is environmental classification. A panel’s eco-friendliness primarily depends on its formaldehyde emission level. Currently, China’s mandatory standards for formaldehyde emissions divide panels into E1 and E0 grades: E1 grade has a formaldehyde emission limit of ≤0.124mg/m³, while E0 grade (a higher standard) has a limit of ≤0.050mg/m³, making it less harmful to human health. For office spaces with dense personnel—especially enclosed areas—prioritizing E0 grade panels is recommended to ensure better air quality.
The second key parameter is load-bearing capacity. Different office furniture has different requirements for the load-bearing capacity of panels. For example, office desks, file cabinets, and other furniture that need to place heavy objects must choose panels with strong load-bearing capacity. Generally speaking, high-density fiberboard and solid wood board have good load-bearing capacity, followed by particleboard, and medium-density fiberboard has relatively weak load-bearing capacity. When purchasing, you can judge the load-bearing capacity by checking the density index of the panel; the higher the density, the better the load-bearing capacity usually is.
The third key parameter is wear resistance and scratch resistance. Office furniture will inevitably be rubbed and collided during daily use, so the wear resistance and scratch resistance of the panel are also important. The melamine-faced paper on the surface of ecological boards has good wear resistance and scratch resistance, while the surfaces of unprocessed fiberboard and particleboard are prone to scratches. When purchasing, you can gently scratch the surface of the panel with your nails or a key and observe whether there are marks to judge its wear resistance.
The fourth key parameter is waterproof performance. For office furniture near windows, pantries, or other humid areas, waterproofing is crucial. Solid wood boards and waterproof-treated HDF offer good water resistance, while particleboard and ordinary fiberboard perform poorly in this regard and are prone to swelling and deformation when damp. When purchasing, ask suppliers if the panels have undergone waterproof treatment, or opt for panels with a waterproof coating.
Finally, I will share some practical purchasing skills. First, check the test report. Regular panel manufacturers will provide environmental protection test reports and performance test reports issued by authoritative third-party institutions. Purchasers can ask the merchant to show the reports to confirm whether the environmental protection level and performance parameters of the panels meet the requirements. Second, smell the odor. High-quality environmentally friendly panels have almost no pungent odor, while low-quality panels will emit a strong formaldehyde odor. When purchasing, you can open the furniture door or drawer and smell it closely. If there is a pungent odor, it is not recommended to buy it. Third, feel the texture. The surface of high-quality panels is flat and smooth, without unevenness, bulging, peeling, or other phenomena, and feels delicate to the touch. In contrast, the surface of low-quality panels may have burrs, graininess, and other problems. Fourth, choose regular brands. Panels from regular brands have more guaranteed quality and better after-sales service, which can effectively avoid purchasing low-quality panels.
